Magnifying glass add-on for Swiss shopping carts

shopping_cart_mag_glass.jpg

Spotted in Geneva by Nicolas Nova at Pasta&Vinegar, these very smartly designed shopping carts, which include a built-in magnifying glass on the handle for the inspection of ingredient labels, fruit bruises, insect infestation and the like. In reality, I’m not terribly sure how helpful this is to fit into every cart — it seems like it would mostly benefit the myopic and elderly — but I still find it a terribly swish design innovation on an invention that has stayed mostly timeless for the last forty years.

I’d rather have a cup holder I think. Or maybe both.

“Myopic and elderly,: eh? You impertinent young whippersnapper! Just wait until you turn 50 and you will beg for one of these.

Sounds like a good idea. 5 years ago I had great eyesight (at 19 my eyesight was exceptional) but I currently need new reading glasses yearly (damned computer screens)
I hate having to squint at the microscopic print on supermarket labels (my girlfriend has a wheat allergy) and still aren’t accustomed to carrying reading glasses everywhere.
    And I’m not even 50 ;p

Best shopping cart accessory ever: laminated flip chart product index with color coded tabs, pictures and aisle numbers. It was in some grocery in the South and all I wanted was beer but I could have hugged the genius who thought of a store table of contents attached to the cart.

Regarding the magnifiers on the Swiss shopping carts, there’s a watch manufacture joke in there somewhere but I’m not finding it.

It’s a great idea, but what happens when you have these carts scattered around the parking lot on a sunny day? Will they start fires?
