The ultimate ray gun pen

An absolutely gorgeous ray gun pen by the appropriately named ACME Writing Tools, available mid-February for $130. The barrel separates from the brightly colored, Marvin Martian base as a retractable roller ball. I only wish the handle / stand were less cartoonishly abstract.

Sure is better than that time I borrowed Ray’s gun pen.

Fedex STILL won’t come to the house.

$130 is half way to a low-end Mountblanc, or a whole lot of medium point Paper Mate Write Bros. pens in my case.

I’d easily spend $130 on this before I spent seven bucks on the Pocket Shark.

Um, I believe the “ultimate” would be a functioning ray gun as well as a functioning pen. And for $130, the least they could do is build in a taser or something.

130 bucks will also get you a Fisher Mars Pen. It’s got enough ink to last the average person 80 years, and is guaranteed to last until we land men on Mars.

For $130, the horridly styled (and probably plastic) base turns this from a Pop-U-Luxe dream to an overpriced nightmare.

It’s like buying a Ferrari with hooves.

Hmmm. Pens have become one of the standard playing-with-a-lathe projects; you can get mechanism kits, mandrels to hold the blanks, pre-cut blanks if you want some more exotic material than the scraps you have lying around your workshop… Turning a fancy pen barrel to serve as ray-gun barrel ought to be straightforward, though unless you’re set up to turn aluminum it’s unlikely to be as pretty as this one.

And coming up with a fancy base shouldn’t be too hard.

Of course if you’re going to do it yourself, you aren’t limited to pens. Turn a larger barrel, and you could have a ray-gun peppermill…

… which is almost a good enough excuse to make me go out and buy that mini-lathe I’ve been dithering about.

Technogeek, do it and let me borrow it. ;-)

Very nice piece. Reminds me of a late ’70′s bong we affectionately called “The Rocket”. THe carb along the pistol grip, which flared out at the bottom, just like this stand. The clip area on the pen would be the inhalation hole; flaring squarish – enough to resemble airline oxygen masks.

The head of the pen area with the ribs had 6 one-hitter slots along a rail. Roommate known as “Chow” as in “chow hound” – think ‘consume mass quantities’ was able to run the six hits in a single breath.

    Ahhh..

TRex needs to see this one.
