Chess set made from car parts
This High Octane chess set made with unmodified car parts is surprising to me: who knew that the guts of an old Impala were so Staunton in design?

This made me smile. My dad had (maybe still has?) a crude wooden box on his workbench full of random carriage bolts and related hardware harvested from various projects, and I have a very early memory of setting them out like Army men or chess pieces.

Unmodified? That rook looks like it was crosscut a few times...

I love it.
Oohahh, that's a castle nut - probably from a tie rod or ball joint. They come like that. The threaded fitting it goes on has a hole drilled through it and you use a cotter pin to lock the nut in place. It's for steering and suspension bolts that are under stress and would be catastrophic if they unthreaded.
Also, always use a new cotter pin!
