Video: 30-foot midair near hit by RAF jet pilot

I am astounded how calm the RAF pilot appears to sound after just barely missing a Tucano training plane with his Tornado. [Telegraph.co.uk]

I guess that’s called training. Keep calm in any situation.
Mind you, the humming seems to be a diversion from what he’s really thinking..!

I presume that there’s plenty of time to freak out when you’re dead.

Heh– marvelously restrained. Mind you, that response typifies the RAF through and through. I’ve never met a bunch of smarter, calmer and more professional people in my life. “Through struggles to the stars” really must be an inspiring motto.

As for the ATC mess-up that let that near-miss occur…
    Well, that’s a different matter.

If you think that’s scary, imagine if it’s an enemy aircraft. no amount of air traffic control will help you then, and you have to turn and give chase.

He went to his safe place, humming “Begin the Beguine”.

    I rather enjoyed his singing.

The only thing that surprised me about this was the quality. Seriously, have target cameras not improved since WWII? And the sound – horrible! I can pick out a couple of sentences, the rest is just noise. And this is during calm, level flight in good weather conditions and peacetime.

Did they use all the money on phat rims and had to get the audiovisual system from Fisher-Price?

IIRC, all the gun camera stuff you see is from an IR camera, so it’s all greyscaled.
