Greetings from outside Denver

My sister and I are driving into Denver now, probably to stop at a
health food store for a quick constitutional and then on toward Salt
Lake. We saw this intrepid young man on the highway, pulling an
uprooted Big Boy on a trailer behind a straining Civic. We salute him.

Sorry I haven’t been able to make more stops, but once I got on the
road I’ve wanted nothing more than to get to Oregon. If we make SLC by
tonight, we can probably get to Eugene by tomorrow evening, a full day
ahead of schedule.

Sent from the road.

    Hey Joel,

I’ve been a resident of Eugene for almost 3 years now, and after growing up in Michigan, then living for years in LA and the Bay Area, I can safely say that the Euge is the least diverse place I’ve ever lived.

But if you’re looking for a massive hippie shindig in Eugene on Friday night, the UO Law School is hosting the annual Public Interest Environmental Law Conference at 15th and Agate street. Conference kicks off tonight and runs through Sunday. All the very best tree-huggers will be there, see http://www.pielc.org/2009/party.html for more details.

I’ll be at McMenamin’s North Bank with my parents and my 5-month-old son on saturday around 6. Not that you need to show up for that.

When you get here, be sure to check out Ninkasi brewing company: http://www.ninkasibrewing.com/

And if you’re wondering about roads, see Oregon’s excellent road-info website at http://www.tripcheck.com It looks like there is a ton of snow over the Cascade passes, but the 5 is clear…

Off to the secret burial grounds of the Big Boys, I suppose.

SLC to Eugene in one shot? Ugh. Call up your girl, get her to meet you in Portland and chill in PTown for a night. It’d probably be a good intermediate transition point between Brooklyn and Eugene, anyway.

I’d be curious if your sleep will be disturbed. Big change from the city streets of NYC to Eugene.

Ha! We “borrowed” one of these during spirit week in high school. That was long before the days such an act would land you in Gitmo. We left a note on his pedestal and returned Bob a day later. Apparently no one was amused except us.

Best luck with the last legs of your journey. If you are up for picking up a pint sometime this weekend or next week after you have settled in I’d be glad to meet up or show you a couple places… I’ll even buy a round.

Too bad you didnt stop at casa bonita!

Not only is it a southpark reference … Its a real place too!

When I was going to school down at Virginia Tech one of the most surreal experiences I encountered was to see two 8yo kids dragging a Big Boy down a running trail. I can only hope that this is the same Big Boy continuing his tour of the US and that he just has a better transportation budget.

    How’s Porter handling the drive?

I’ve been living in Eugene since the early 70s, and I have to agree with SG. If you’re looking for international food, you can almost forget it, unless it’s Indian or Thai. Good Chinese or Mexican food is almost impossible to come by!

Hope you enjoy it and get here safe! Drive to the top of Skinner’s Butte to get a nice, easy view of the whole city :)

Oh to have a big boy…

Did you ever make it to the City Museum in St. Louis?

Good luck on the rest of the trip!

I was never a big fan of Father Guido Sarducci, but he did have one routine I loved. He said he one day wanted to buy up all the abandoned Bob’s Big Boy statues, then go to a shoreline somewhere and bury them all, standing, facing the sea. His hope was that one day a future race would dig them up and proclaim “To societies passed, he must have been some sort of God”.

    @#8 johnnyaction,

Anybody planning on stopping at a health food store for provisions is never going to be able to stomach the food at Casa Bonita!

Maybe it’s Johnny Big Boyseed, coming to plant the diner chain in Colorado. I know Big Boy only through Zippy the Pinhead, so as soon as I encounter an actual one I’m going to have lunch, by gum!
