The agony of choice

IMG_2291.jpg

The idea that companies can offer us too many choices is quite a condescending one. But, as this baffling image from Gizmodo demonstrates, it is nonetheless true. I’d say “Guess the manufacturer!” but hey, it’s kind of obvious!

The punchline is, of course, that none of these actually fit into modern Walkman phones: you need an adapter.

And then you have Japan where this is not enough choice… Either way, choice is better than no choice at all. I really don’t understand why this is such a big deal. Is everyone really bothered b/c of the number of colors offered? Really?

The problem, anon #1, is when your grandparents get you a set for your birthday or Christmas or something, you end up being saddled with the hot pink ones because they didn’t sell and are discounted.

this is not a problem actually. i always buy the colours that do not sell. for example i bought a pink first gen eeepc just because it was discounted. consumer electronics are disposable and since noone expects to keep a phone or a computer for 20years i prefer cheap to hip.

large choice in models is always better than a single product lineup (see nokia versus apple)

second from the right, bottom row.

I have those, and they plug right into my Walkman using the standard mini audio jack.

And weirdly , they are extremely good. Normally the bundled earphones are terrible.

I too used to buy the remaindered items so spent a couple of years wandering around with the white and baby pink earphones that had Hello Kitty’s happy palsied face on them.

Really incongruous on a Skinhead in Glasgow.
