The Movito, an award-winning electric scooter design

movito-ed01.jpg

No-one sane drives a scooter along Pittsburgh’s road-strewn potholes. The Movito, though, can combine with another Movito to become a kind of street catamaran: good for mastering the elements and awful chipsealing alike.

A design by Tai Chiem, it was a winner at NASA’a “Create the Future” design contest, and is imagined as a fully-electric plugin.

Would that blade like curved ridge be between ones legs?

  2. winkybb says:

Nice concept and a cool look. But to call (“imagine”) it as electric is a bit too much. Unfortunately, electric scooters still need somewhere for the big battery.

One of those three-wheeled Piaggis as an electric vehicle would make a great inner-city commuter. Still not as good as a bicycle, though.

    Looks like the “Freudian” model.

It’s a lot easier to avoid potholes in one track than in two.

  5. dculberson says:

Small scooter tires are horrible when you actually do hit a pothole, though.

Do you know, I’ve been riding me a big-ass bike, here in London town, and do you know, I’m just not happy with the emissions. So I like the look of this. And probably, the smell.

  7. Garr says:

WinkyBB, you mean the “Ape”? It’s “Piaggio”, btw :)

  8. dculberson says:

Here in the US the Piaggio 3-wheeler is called the MP3. I don’t know what it’s called in other markets.

  9. winkybb says:

    Garr,

Yeah, “Piaggio”. My bad. Why is it called the “Ape”? There are a few models of different capacities. I’ve not ridden one but they get good reviews. I still think a plug-in electric version would be pretty cool. You see quite a few plug-in 2-wheel scoots here in Vancouver. Not sure what brand. They are scary quiet.

scooters – now with 15% more gay.

*I ride a scooter to work every day, so I can say that.*

  11. SteveNZ says:

Has anyone ever made a truly practical device that uses one of those axle-less, spoke-free wheels, as seen on the front of this sketch? Is there any advantage to having a complex component with lots of fiddly little parts certain to pick up road gunk and crap out in spectacular fashion, rather than an old-fashioned axle?

Form follows function, and less is more, definitely don’t apply to this techno-kitsch design.

  12. tuckels says:

Man i could ride around on this thing saying “ciao” to everyone all day.

  13. Downpressor says:

came for the fat girl joke, left disappointed.

I do believe the hybrid MP3 should be landing stateside soon… I’m rather torn, because I mostly just want a little Vespa, but the hybrid MP3 is quite the little temptress…
