iPhone 4G: will it slice bread?

Dotdosh imagines the next iPhone with an unsourced pic:
Could this be the next iPhone? A photo that was recently posted shows these images, but are to be taken with a grain of salt. If this is the next generation iPhone its pretty sexy and it looks to have a bigger screen and the silent toggle switch moved. As said before, take this with a grain of slat until Apple finally announces the next iPhone.
It won't be that thin, and that complicated speaker grille between bezel and touchscreen doesn't look very Appley. Apart from that, though, it's a damn good mockup!

The bottom isn't thick enough for a dock connector. There is no way that apple would put it on the side.

For what it's worth, it seems the speaker dealy is there since they have put in a front facing camera.
From the front, this looks very Sonyish to me. I like it. I know this is blashemy, but I am not a fan of the wicked curve that mockup has (though it is admitedly Apple-esque). I think there is still something tobe said for straight lines in design

The grille does mimic the Mac Pro somewhat. Though I'm sure this rendering is bogus.

please don't call it the iphone 4g, that doesn't make any sense at all. The first one wasn't called the 2g. It goes iPhone, iPhone 3G, and what ever they decide to call a new one, it won't be 4G.

If it runs on WiMax, we'll call it the 4G :)

How the hell do you take a picture of something if the viewfinder is facing the same way as the camera you vain bastards

That looks very much like the Toshiba TG01 smartphone.
But yeah, I'm sure the rendering is a fake.

I wonder how large is a grain of slat? :)

@6 you can't tell from the render, but obviously the whole back of the device is a giant (somewhat curved) screen of the same sort that the LG Mirror had.

Not thin enough yet. I'll buy one when it's a tattoo I can have applied to the palm of my hand.

It WILL be called the 4G because it uses 4G technology.
SO who ever stated "iPhone, iPhone 3G, and what ever they decide to call a new one, it won't be 4G." is completely wrong.
Actually, the new iPhone 4G will be released for development probably in mid summer when the 3.0 software comes readily available to the general public.... this comes straight from AT&T who are currently making the 4G download speeds available.
How fast is 4G speeds?? You would be able to transfer a 4.7GB DVD in less than 10.5 seconds theoretically.
BAM!

accessatl: hahahaha. I am literally laughing out loud. 4G, when it comes, will probably peak out at 240 Mbps of shared bandwidth in the most forward-looking, lowest-traffic case. I expect that here in the USA we'll see something much slower than that, but let's go with that. Even at that speed, it would take about 3 minutes to download 4.7 GB, making no allowance for overhead.
And "mid summer"? AT&T is talking about 4G in 2012. Verizon is talking about 2009, although there aren't 4G handsets remotely close to ready.

Eh... the camera on the front is for video chat. duh. It won't replace the larger, usually higher megapixel, camera on the back. Most 3G phones have had this for years.
As for the name, i seriously doubt it will be called iPhone 4G. AT&T has stated it won't start testing LTE (to upgrade to 4G) until 2010 or 2011. Until then it will stick with its 3G network, with possible upgrades to HSPA+ in 2009-2010.
Seeing as this also won't be the 4th generation of the product line either, i would wager that 4G is not going to be used.
I think they will concentrate on some of the new functions, either software or hardware. If there is a front facing camera, the iPhone Chat or something along those lines seems feasible.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I wish they'd take whatever technology people are imaging will make the next device thinner and instead use that space to make the battery last longer.

An observation: If the button on that render is the same size as the iPhone's button, then that device has a 5" screen.

@Matthew Miller, no, you're not crazy. I feel the same way. They keep making iPod smaller and smaller, but the usage you get out of the battery seems to stay the same. I hope the find ways to make the next iPhone thinner, but not make it thinner, and instead put a bigger battery and more memory in it. I'd also like more RAM in the iPhone so apps wouldn't crash any more. At LEAST 200MB.

remember guys that the new iphone will not have the same connection thing as all other ipod / phone touches. they are prob going to use a mini usb which is faster, more energy efficient , and more widely compatible with european countries.
