Hustler Zeon, a big yellow electric riding lawnmower

ZeonPic.jpg

The Hustler Zeon is an all-electric, zero-turn riding lawnmower—they say it’s the first in the world. Hustler’s site has nearly no information, but Uncrate reports the Zeon will have up to 80 minutes of mowing time per charge. That sounds great for home use, but won’t cut it for bigger jobs unless you can cycle batteries through with an external charger.

No price yet, but you can count on it costing more than your average Snapper.

Last I heard (Popular Mechanics I think) the plan was to have a base price of about $8,500 USD with accessories quickly bringing it up to +$10k.

Until they bring that price down a smidge I’m going to stick with my 10 year old clunker.

Electric riding lawnmowers are hardly “green.” Sure, if your electricity is probably marginally cleaner than burning your own gas. But riding mowers in general are about the very worst energy hogs in the world — worse per hour than hummers.

Unless you’re plugging it into your electric solar panel, this will still probably be the most polluting item in the house. I’d also love to see someone plug it into a kill-a-watt and seeing exactly how much electricity — and dollars — they are spending for their 80-minute mowing time.

Really, is there a market for this? People who think green should be letting their lawns grow.

I haven’t lived in a house that has a lawn big enough to justify the purchase of a riding mower in decades, but dang is that studly. The steering controls–if that’s what those crash-bar-looking thingies over the seat are–remind me of the cop cars from Alan Moore’s Top 10 comic.

I went to Hustler.com to find out more information about this, and didn’t have any luck. Interesting site, though.

we could grow a garden with the lawn space, and get a-plenty of wondrous veggies, and spend times with friends, family and neighbors in the good old outdoors, or we could let the lawn grow long long long and scythe it twice a year as ive seen done with large lawns in switzerland, or buy some sheeep and let them graze, scythe and keep what they dont eaat for the winter, and you’ve got your own meat and wool, or some to sell. there is a-plenty all around if we conserve energy (like not keeping lawns) and actually spend energy where it will return in plenty (like the ideas above).

    love love love

Or, purchase an all-electric robot mower instead. These use far less energy than a rider because it does not have to carry the weight of a person. They also keep the lawn mowed vs. letting it get long.

Lawns are here to stay – the only question now is how to keep them trimmed.

Hey SamSam….Just finished my own riding electric mower conversion. I used my KilaWatt to measure cost…about 7.5KW for about 1.5 hours mowing time….about 66cents
