Its for neutralizing magnetism that may build up in audio tape read/write heads and affect the sound.
Or it could obviate the need for those cumbersome and unsightly aluminum foil hats.

Yep, I’ve got a pretty similar unit as well that I use on my reel-to-reel decks. Got it on the cheap, and it does what it needs to.
