JetLev, a jetpack you might someday actually use
Expect to see the JetLev water-propelled jetpack at seaside resorts near you. It's actually sort of brilliant—flight time should be much greater than silver-and-peroxide models, and crashes (probably) won't kill you. (Thanks, JP!)

Yeah. I give it until the first idiot crash lands on the little pump island it floats behind you, breaks his leg, and sues them out of existence.
Now...having said that, I'll be the first in line to try the sucker.

Seems a little fuel-intensive for a fun summertime toy.

I wouldn't say no to a flight in one, but I bet it's REALLY loud.

#1: that's why you'll see things like this at resorts in Mexico and the Caribbean, outside of the range of US lawsuit.

Could an airborne version be built with the air pump pulled along behind you by a similar tether, suspended by a helium or hot air balloon?

Bottom feeding fish,habitat,fish eggs.
Seems to me that this would f*ck them up royally.
Still looks like a lot of fun.

Does the pump suck up water from the lake and shoot it out rather than from a tank that gets refilled? I ask because it would brilliant to have an unlimited 'fuel' source like that, you'd never have to stop!

HarpDevil, indeed it does suck the water from the lake.

Basically, you are riding a fire hose.
Pity anyone who gets flown over; that's going to hurt.

I'm sure it's all fun until you fly a little too high and drag your trailing water pump out of the water, and ...SPLAT!
Anonymous @#8, no. You have to pump sufficient mass, and that's a lot harder to do with air than with water.
There is a prototype "jet"-pack out there with a pair of big mutha ducted fans, though.

@Harpdevil : the energy to actually pump the water won't actually come from the water itself, so the degree to which you can store and release that energy from the floating pumping island behind it will be what limits your ride. It has to last longer than the rocket style ones, though.
Also, this looks fun but still dangerous - please wear a helmet if you do it! k thanks bye

Has everyone talking about how dangerous this thing is or making comments about lawsuits ever even been to a beach? Every type of water recreation is dangerous. Jet skis, parasailing, kite surfing, surfing, windsurfing, wake boarding, water skiing, snorkeling, scuba. All of these have inherent dangers, that's why they make you sign release forms.

Jeez people. I think the engineer who thought this thing up is painfully aware of the dangers and issues with the device. I guess he should just shut the project down now. Because, people don't hurt themselves on "normal" water gear like boats, canoes, kayaks and skidoos.
