So It Begins: Swedish factory fined for violent robot uprising

From The Local (dot se):

The incident took place in June 2007 at a factory in Bålsta, north of Stockholm, when the industrial worker was trying to carry out maintenance on a defective machine generally used to lift heavy rocks. Thinking he had cut off the power supply, the man approached the robot with no sense of trepidation.

But the robot suddenly came to life and grabbed a tight hold of the victim's head. The man succeeded in defending himself but not before suffering serious injuries.

Is this some sort of Viral ad for the new Terminator movie?

Less enjoyable but more accurate headline: "Man neglects to disconnect power to industrial equipment, learns why you should always do so before servicing."

My dad, a retired machinist, has great stories about being called into car plants in the 80's, and how occasionally a robot arm would go crazy. He said you'd hear alarms go off, and see a lot of white-coated technicians running to cut the power as the arm swung violently around, slamming into anything in it's circumference. I guess it had enough power to punch a hole in the wall.

Tricky things, robots. I used to develop system software at ABB Robotics back in the 80's, and on one occasion had to cure a case of "robot epilepsy" with bit of gene therapy (actually Motorola 68000 assembler code).
