Daniel Eindhoven’s homemade coil gun

coilgun_367.jpg

You’re looking at Daniel Eindhoven‘s “MV CoilMaster Mark1 Coil Gun”, capable of shooting metal slugs at speeds up to 110km/h. I’m not sure why it has a light bulb, but I think we can all agree that all guns from here on out should have them. [via Hacked Gadgets]

The bulb is used as charging resistor for the capacitor bank when using the mains connection. the higher wattage, the faster it charges. the problem with charging resistors is that they will dissipate a lot of energy, at this way it is safely dissipated which means less heat inside the gun.
maybe it’s not the best solution, but it was the easiest.

the bulb at the picture is 150W

100 feet per second? Is my math correct? If so, that does seem a bit on the slow side, but faster than anything I could ever do.

    This is absolutely fantastic.

I was just wondering how feasible something like this would be to build the other day. My idea was to use sewing needles as ammo though.

All that power and in the end you would be better off throwing the “bullet”.

The coil seems really sort, but the maker probably knew what he was doing.

My life now has meaning. I just built a tesla coil, but this, man, this is “F”ing awsome. There’s a 13 year old in the back of my head that won’t stop laughing.

30.5 m/s, about as fast as the average velocity of a car, probably couldn’t catch you if you really hit the gas. About 1/10th the speed of a .38 caliber. They may be bigger, but I’m pretty sure it won’t get much faster if you shrink down the bullet.

…Fracking brilliant! I want two of these!

the complainers are missing the npoint–

if you want a better ray gun, build one yourself..

I for one , want it..

all it needs is a couple of gears and a steam powered charger, and youd be all ready for a trip on the nautilus….

Wow. 68 MPH. That would sting, possibly even bruise.

Somewhat nifty, but you can throw the gun faster than the projectile it shoots.
