Computer lock-up using the Monoprice Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter

Not a big deal, but throwing this out there for anyone else who may be experiencing it: About once every dozen times or so, plugging in the Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter from Monoprice causes my unibody MacBook Pro to hard lock. I can only fix it by power cycling the laptop.

For $10 I'm not going to complain, especially when it may well be a problem with the computer—and no one else on the Monoprice customer reviews page seems to mention it—but if it has happened to you, take comfort: you are not alone.

The Macbook Pro mini-displayport seems to be cursed by an extra helping of good old "apple revision A". Apple's own first-part dual-link DVI connectors can't seem to hack it, and now you report that what I'm pretty sure is a passive adapter is locking it up from time to time.

It just works... until you try to do real world things.

Any chance this is an HDCP issue, where the adapter is considered "suspicious"?

HDCP handshaking would be my guess -- I had to stop using HDMI on my S3 TiVo because it would lock up periodically.

Anything interesting from the logs around the time of the lock-up? Can you still log in via ssh?

Should have gone with the Monster Cable!

(just kidding)

Don't know if this is related, but I've got a new Mac mini connected to my HDTV via the mini-DVI to DVI adapter and a DVI to HDMI cable. Every once in a while, I get no video, although screen sharing the mini on my MacBookPro shows the mini is putting out video. My old Mini with standard DVI had no problem.

Same issue with a different brand miniDVI>DVI adaptor + DVI>HDMI Adaptor and early black macbook... Seems also to cause some sort of grounding issue? Big static shock from the machine and complete lockup of all input (movies etc. continue to play).
