JVC 8K projector: Until your monitor has 8,192 x 4,320 pixels...
There aren't much in the way of details—and this is pro gear, so it's wank material for the likes of most of us anyway—but JVC has launched two new video projectors, an 8K (8,192 x 4,320 pixel) and 4K (3,840 x 2,160 pixel) models, as well as the pleasingly austere 4K camera seen above.
The camera's just a prototype, but there are plenty of other high-end digital camcorders that can shoot 4K these days, or at least the RED and surely some stuff from Sony, right? I just said I wasn't a professional. Back off! (See also: Dalsa, Basler, other companies that I could Google.)
So what do you think? I'm getting the inkling that we're only a couple of years away from 4K monitors becoming the hot new thing for desktop PCs, seasoned with a dash of resolution-independent operating system widget rendering.

I look forward to this future.

In addition to the fine 4K digital cameras you mentioned and neglected, there is also the fact that most film is scanned and edited, composited, and finished digitally before being printed back to film, except for when it isn't because it will be delivered digitally. not having to go back to film means better, cheaper, faster delivery.
also, at least in the independent production community, there has been a lot of talk about how much resolution is overkill, considering the realities of digital projectors deployed in commercial theaters which are mostly 2K, are only in a small percentage of theaters, and due to expense are not likely to be upgraded anytime soon. (there is also the fact that the 2K projectors look pretty darned good to most audiences).
so, assuming these projectors do not suck, having more projectors competing in the market is a good thing, and potentially a game changer.

As far as the PC world goes... Think about how many MIPS it's taking just to push pixels around on current size screens (to the point where video processors are often the biggest power hog in the box, exceeding the draw of what is nominally the main processor). And unless you've got a huge monitor or your nose to the screen, there's a diminishing-returns factor in increasing resolution.
I'm already running my PC at less than its maximum possible resolution, just because my middle-aged eyes no longer like six-point type. (Real six points, not the abuse of the term.)

Yo, #3, when you have 4096 processors, your PC won't care about 8k pixels.
The true sadness will be that with this high a resolution it won't be possible to do 8-bitty pixel graphics any more, except faked. :( Everything is going to be vectors, all the time.

Why bother with monitors at all? A projection based display is far more flexible in terms of how it can be used.
