RadTech ProCable Shortz

The product's name is longer than the thing itself. TUAW reviewed it (it works) and recommends it for ridding oneself of the "tangled nest of wires." At $8, it's also cheaper than the standard issue. [RadTech via TUAW]

Or you could just put a rubber band around the cable.

Sounds lovely for portables to me, I often lug around enough cables that the actual volume of coiled cable is annoying.

I have a similar thing that I picked up in Japan. Just the two plugs with a swivel in the middle, maybe two inches long. Throw it in the bag and forget about it. Works great for traveling and I can't count the number of times I've lent it out in a coffee shop to someone who needed to top off their iPhone.
Wish I could find the thing in the US, I'd give them as gifts, but I can't even find a manufacturer's logo on the one I have.
