As soon as my ISP lets me ditch my overpriced landline and pay only for overpriced internet access, I’m totally signing up for the overpriced Sprint plan this delightful device is bundled with.

I hope the regular unlimited data plans work with this thing; I am seriously tempted, if so. But I won’t be changing plans just to get it.

I’ll update this with more info later, but the plans look to be pretty good. There’s the “Everything data” which is unlimited text, mms, data (anybody know of caps on Sprint yet?), evening/weekend minutes, and 450 or 900 peak minutes for $69.99 or $89.99 respectively. There’s also the $99.99 unlimited everything which adds unlimited voice minutes.

That compares favorably to the iPhone plan because of the text messaging – iPhone adds $20/month for unlimited text messaging!

The big savings is for people like me on a shared plan. Sprint’s shared unlimited data plans including two phones start at $129.99 for 1500 minutes, compared to iPhone plans starting at $129.99 for 700 minutes. Sprint’s additional phone charge is $19.99 while AT&T’s is $39.99. BIG difference. And the same text messaging difference exists there, too – included unlimited for the Sprint plan vs. $30/month for iPhone family plans.

I considered moving to iPhones for our business phones here but just couldn’t justify the $110.00/month that AT&T wanted for service compared to Sprint. Yes, for our five phones, we would pay $1,320/year to use an AT&T/iPhone versus a Sprint/anythingelse.

IIRC, Sprint has a 5GB/month cap on so-called “unlimited” data usage.
Despite that, I’m switching to Sprint and picking up one of these, and an LG Lotus (the square, purple phone) for my wife, once I can figure out a way out of our Helio contract.

Can anyone speak authoritatively (or at least convincingly) on Sprint’s tethering options and where those would fit in with the Pre and its data/service plans?

  6. Ryan says:

    #5:

Like on my Treo, Sprint is not allowing tethering. That said, since WebOS is Linux-based, I expect a hack for it within days of the phone’s release.

    More info here.

I meant to add that I got confirmation from Sprint that the plans I mentioned will be what supports the Pre. Much better pricing than the iPhone plans. We’ll see how the hardware and software review! Keeping my fingers crossed and my rep will email me when she can order it for me..
