Phones and Wireless

As If

(2) Requires new two-year AT&T wireless service contract, sold separately to qualified customers; credit check required; must be 18 or older. For non-qualified customers, including existing AT&T customers who want to upgrade from another phone or replace an iPhone 3G, the price with a new two-year agreement is $499 (8GB), $599 (16GB), or $699 (32GB).

Grrr. My first-gen contract expires soon enough, but if I buy this version of the phone I won't be able to upgrade next year when they might decide to actually re-design the damn thing. I'm not a big fan of the plastic look.

Well it's disgusting but it's obvious what's going on. ATT already has you (us) suckaz paying 70+ bucks a month. They don't give two shihotays about getting us into new hardware. They are desperate for new suckas and they will subsidize them into new iPhones.

That's actually somewhat interesting, as anyone upgrading from an iPhone to an iPhone 3G was considered "qualified."

If going from any model iPhone to a new iPhone is no longer qualifying... well. I think that's somewhat interesting, and not completely sure of what it might mean.

doesn't it simply make sense to break contract, pay the ETF and then sign up again? I'm not a customer so I have no idea how the math breaks down.

When upgrading from the original iPhone to the 3G they didn't have to take into account the complex accounting that makes the 3G so comparatively cheap. The original iPhone was purchased outright, then AT&T pretty just made money off the plan. On the 3G the initial purchase price of the phone is amortized into the plan over the two year contract.

Of course, as an anti-buy-the-newest thing person, I think this deal rocks!

* $99.00* — 8GB iPhone 3G (black) * $199.00* — 16GB iPhone 3G S (black or white) * $299.00* — 32GB iPhone 3G S (black or white)

Anyone who is already with AT&T whose contract is up for renewal should see these prices

No thanks. I find joining to the Church of Scientology cheaper and the company there significantly more level headed.

It's pretty fracking annoying. I guess I'm sticking with my 3G for the foreseeable future.

Wow. What about the original iPhone? I got the first gen one, pre-subsidy, and I've still got 10 months until my 2 year contract is up. I held off upgrading to the 3G, but now I'd rather like to move up, not if its going to be $500 though!

I've got the same question, Sepptb. Unfortunately the phone support lines are pretty much dead/clogged and so's AT&T's site, so no answers as of yet.

Anyone who wants to see what their price is go check out the "order online" site at buyiphone.apple.com

I was a $600 1G buyer, I got mine for $299 (32GB)

SCAUGHT and BTB are correct, I am a 1G buyer as well and I got the lower pricing. There's a qualification confirmation step to check your existing ATT account when you place the order from the Apple store. I'd been ineligible for the 3G when it came out, and so just waited it out until today. In a year I'll be envious of the next one, but for now...

Hahaha.... Google G1 FTW

Note that the "$299" does not include tax and shipping. I ended up paying $334 with tax (plus shipping), which I found confusing, as my sales tax is only 5%.

If the subsidy is tied to your contract to AT&T it looks cheaper to pay to get out of your 2 year contract early ($175) then to upgrade while in your current plan.

Good news, everyone! The AT&T early termination fee is actually less than $175 for most people, because they prorate it:

I bought the iPhone 3G when it was released last summer, and it looks like my ETF is only about $125.

The most unhappy people I have ever met outside of prison all had cell phones. I don't think the cell phones were the source of their unhappiness.

The most enlightened, happiest people I've ever known not only did not have cell phones, they didn't need them. The second part being the part that I think is related to their happiness.

Why would you need the ability to communicate with others from anywhere? Wherever you are, that's where it's at. Be there. If there is somebody you can't be without, be with them.

Wow. I never thought I'd find a piece of tech that made the PS3 look cheap by comparison.

And, yes, I have a T-Mobile G1, I got it for $180, and I have to say that I'm happy with it.

Anon17, a cell phone is like any other tool. Some people misuse them and some people don't.

I would totally buy a $700 phone. As soon as it can show me holograms of nekid' ladies and I can use it to power my jetpack.

I just got my G1 last week and for the most part I love it, the only thing that I can think of right now that I do not like about it is the keyboard, its like the buttons are not tall enough or something.
