There's something about transporting sailboats via a fossil fuel driven ship that seems wrong to me. Is it really that much cheaper to ship it that way than to get someone to sail it...

Yeah, I keep wondering if it wouldn't be cheaper to hire somebody to just pilot the boat, but I guess it would cost in human time and other consumables anyways.

The idea is to summer in the Med, winter in the tropics. A lot of these boats are not really designed for an Atlantic crossing if the going gets rough. Add in the 3-4 week trip with a captain, crew, return air tickets & the provisioning needed and financially it probably starts to make sense.

#2 - Most of these boats would spend a good deal of time under power so the Yacht Express may actually be more environmentally sound.

RC sailboats are the most peaceful way to enjoy radio control boating. This way are also the hardest rc boats to master - with a nitro or electric model boat you can just open the throttle and blast round the lake.
