Do Your CPR Training via iPhone [Just Don't Practice on Me]
iCPR Lite is a new, $0.99 app for the iPhone that provides visuals and prompts to help you learn basic Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation.
But is it better than the free CPR*Choking app released last month?
If you have experience with either and/or know CPR and can provide some insight, please drop some knowledge in the comments or email me: steven AT boingboing DOT net.

I just renewed my CPR certs last week, and these cover the very basic.
The problem is, learning to do this is VERY kinesthetic. You don't learn everything you need without doing it...and having someone telling you what you are doing wrong. Yeah, the Red Cross has CPR classes via the web, but I wouldn't recommend them unless you are just renewing...I had a few 'test only' type renewals, so I figured I'd take the class and glad I did (well, and my dad died of a heart attack a few months ago and no one helped...I figured I didn't want to be the guy sitting on the side watching someone else's dad do the same if I had the chance).
$65 got CPR / Defib, First Aid and Blood Borne Path training...well worth it. Far more expensive than the $1 that iCPR charges...but much better.
I just checked out both apps...they both give the bare minimum...the iCPR is is prettier and more academic. It goes over just the basics and it looks like they have a few OCR errors in the instructions (i.e., chest compressions from 11.2 to 2 inches??? I think they meant 1 1/2 to 2 inches). The CPR-Choking shows the bare minimum that if you didn't have any training you MIGHT be able to save someones life. It skipped several steps that I would consider important...but if you aren't trained, well...this isn't the time to be learning...get in there and do SOMETHING.

From a reader who wished to remain anonymous:
"I hold due CPR certifications: CPR for the Lay Responder and CPR for the Professional Responder. I'm also a CPR/Lay instructor.
I just downloaded CPR*Choking and played several of the segments. Initially, I was pretty horrified by what I saw, the choking techniques were way off and the CPR techniques were clumsy and lacked detailed information such as now many compressions per minute and for deep a compression should be. But then I realized that that was the purpose of classroom education. As a refresher for someone who's been through CPR training, CPR*Choking has a lot of promise because it reminds you of the correct steps to take, if it doesn't explain why those steps are important.
Then I realized who the target audience is. CPR*Choking is operating under the idea that *some* knowledge is better than *none* and that if even one life is saved, then it's a successful program. Of course, what CPR*Choking doesn't tell you is that if you simply watch the video and then jerk someone's head back (as illustrated in the video), snapping their neck in the process, the Good Samaritan laws won't protect you because you've exceeded your training."

Dear All,
thank you very much for all comments about iCPR lite. Thanks to Clif Marsiglio for discover an evident OCR problem with inches.
I write to dSign to revise errors.
I'm a scientific referent for iCPR project.
I'm an anaesthetist and I work in Intensive care unite and I'm also involved like ALS instructor in CPR training in my country (Italy).
I try to explain you with my terrible English the objectives and the future of this project.
First of all...I ask to dSign to realize my idea and this project is only the idea of one person (me) without any Society, Council or drug company behind. The work of dSign must be paid in some way for this reason application is not free.
First objective: increase awareness in general population about CPR...you know how is difficult in Europe and specially in United States make aware about cardiac arrest...and iCPR lite have this first end point.
Also we use all the internet and new Web 2.0 techniques to spread the word about iCPR.
For exaple we create a short viral video with a help of friends that voluntary partecipate to video to increase awareness always with icpr (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_gJBhrU0lw).
Second objective: iCPR full is to have a simple feedback quality cpr tool to have some feedback about chest compressions rate and depht.
The tool can be utilize during formal cpr course to help measure of performance for example.
I agree with the comment about how is difficult to learn CPR with iphone/ipod tools but iCPR in his disclaimer declare that is not a CPR course obviously.
My personal vision is:
if you use all the existing tools to increase awareness about CPR and cardiac arrest is better than nothing.
For this reason our slogan is:
"iCPR is better than nothing"....
I have a dream for the future...maybe one day a lay person use iCPR for help someone after he look slideshow only for fun....and this is better than nothing.
With regards

I don´t think that these "online" knowledges will help in a real situation.
You need to practice to do CPR correctly!
Thanks.
