Microsoft won’t pay for RIM or iPhone data plans any more

Microsoft is reportedly saving some dough by only reimbursing employees’ data plans if they’re using a Windows-based cellphone. Gruber masters the art of understatment: “man, look at what a piece of crap Windows Mobile is, today.”

Still using my HTC Kaiser (though now running WinMo 6.5) and still happy with it. Out in the hills behind Santa Barbara yesterday the independent (ie not data connection dependent) sat nav kept on running when all the iPhones around lost the ability to talk to google maps.

This is a good thing, precisely because Windows Mobile is so awful. If the people who foisted that abomination on the world are forced to use it, then they are that much more motivated to make it suck less. No more “I’m pumping out utter shit, but at least I don’t have to use it”.

I used to have a Blackberry and I liked it. I now have a Windows Mobile device and I like it too. The iPhone looks neat. I seriously don’t get the interface snobs that find one to be overwhelmingly better than the other. I guess it’s the usual Microsoft bashing which is getting very old.
