Randy Sarafan's Simple Sequencer

sarafan_simplesequencer.jpg

Randy Sarafan writes:

One of the keys to making good music is mindless repetition. That is what the simple sequencer is great at. It does the same thing over and over again in an eight note sequence. You can adjust the frequency of the note, the duration of the note and the pause between notes. If you get really good, you can anticipate the next note and change things up on the fly. This little box is sure to provide endless hours of fun.

There was something like this on the ancient Roland analog synth that I used in a college class in the early '80s.

It was the MOST INCREDIBLY FRUSTRATING AND USELESS THING EVER. Took endless knob tweaking just do get any musically interesting results at all, since there was no quantization of notes or durations, and since increasing one duration early in the sequence threw the rest of the durations out of whack, requiring them to be correspondingly reduced.

(Sure, the whole synth required tons of knob tweaking and patch-cord plugging, but the rest of it was awesome. Just the sequencer sucked.)

I agree that the box looks really swell, especially the multicolored knobs, and it's retro as all get-out. But I don't know that anyone's going to get much fun out of it. Maybe if they're stoned and just want to make trippy bleeps, but not if they have any musical goals.
