I have a Vaio VGN-FZ348E (catchy name!) from a about 1.5 years ago, also $800 or so, with a blu-ray drive, and I love it. Mine has a 1280×800 screen, which is only a little less than ideal— HD movies are gorgeous anyway.
Point being, I think Vaios are the nicest non-Apples available. I don’t have an Apple because their guts are moderately overpriced and they don’t have internal blu-ray drives.
