HP releases classic scientific calculator emulators for iPhone

That's not a picture of an old HP 15C Scientific Calculator—or rather, it is, but only as it appears as an application for the iPhone or iPod Touch, available now in the iTunes App Store for $30.
Too expensive? You can get the HP 12C Financial Calculator model software for only $15.

My brother and I inherited two different models of those calculators from our dad when he passed away around 5 years ago. He was an electrical engineer.

Crazy pricing. Maybe if the $30 included all the classic HP calculators. But not for a single model.

There's many people who are very comfortable with these calculators. I know people who still use them even though there's better apps out there.
Since I use an Android phone, I use HandyCalc. You can see it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5wjLfImVf2U

I would pay $30 for an HP 48G / GX emulator in a second.
I have a 10 year old 48GX as my daily calculator at work, and I'm going to be more or less heartbroken if/when it dies.
I have a 48G at home I had intended to slot in as a replacement for the GX, but the keyboard connections are becoming unreliable, and I'm still too chicken to pry it apart to fix it.
Although, that said, I think the majority of my HP 46G/GX love stems from the solid feel of the keys, and the general heft of it calculator -- something that would be lacking in an iPhone emulator.

...what's wrong with the built-in scientific calculator???
open calculator... rotate to landscape... voila.

...and the free version with all the calculators is gone:

How is this a copyright violation?

I agree about $30 being worth it for an hp48 emulator - I've been using hp calculators since I was a little kid, since my dad was an engineer at hp, but since the second half of that life has been spent with an hp48sx, it's hard to have much love for the 15c emulator..
Is there an iphone rpn calc with a visible stack?

Of course, if you have a Nokia N800/N810 you can use the Free42 HP42 emulator (although it uses a HP1x type landscape layout). Or a pile of other free calculator apps, plotting ones included.

Note: HPCalc is still on Cydia for free.
I'm still anxiously awaiting the return of the HP-27S. What a great calculator.

I wish they'd re-release the actual HP 15c. (apparently some other people do too)
When a calculator is on a touchscreen, what it looks like is just a nice touch.
I also agree that a good hp48 emulator might be worth $30, but I think a visible-stack RPN graphing calculator designed from the start for a touchscreen would be even better.

Eeep. I still use my 15C. It even still has the glow in the dark Optimus Prime sticker I put on it in 1982.

I loved that calculator and RPN -- it's what I still use. My wife and I (who both studied physics in the 80's) have three: our two from college, and one we picked up from a friend several years back in case one of ours should break.
Seriously, this was the best calculator ever, and I still get a little confused on non-RPN calculators at first when I have to use one.

i wonder how long before apple realizes that you can program these devices. and i'm sure they're interpreting the RPN based programming language of the old devices. ergo, like the Commodore 64 emulator, this could be a challenge to apple's walled garden.

Agree with #16; I got a 15C in '85 and it's still my main calculator; I love RPN!

I hope to see soon an hp48/50 emulator for the iPhone.
$ 30 for smartphone applications is a litle step, $10 @ $20 I think is more reasonable, and would buy without hesitation

If you like the HP 12C financial calculator, you should try the Victor V12. The V12 works the same, looks better, and has much larger display digits. Several companies sell the product. Try searching Yahoo or Google shopping. Why pay $30 for an Apple ap when you can spend less and get a real physical product? Here are a few sites:

OfficeWorld.com
Shoplet.com
