CrunchPad of Singapore

More CrunchPad details, in a Mike Arrington profile published by the SF Business Times:

"We're going to make some really big announcements," said Arrington, who predicted a prototype would be ready for unveiling by the end of July. "We're full on. These prototypes are real."

Arrington started work on the Crunchpad after meeting an expert in electronics manufacturing in China, and these days he estimates the project commands three-quarters of his time.

"There's factories that just churn stuff out. It's pretty simple," said Arrington, who has incorporated a separate company called Crunchpad Inc. that has 14 employees in Singapore.

Yeah, yeah, whatever. In the end the price will be $800+ and the whole thing no more than yet another luxury item.

I'd start thinking about it at $150 ...

Arrington has maintained all along that one of the major goals of the project was a sub-$200 price point. If it somehow ballooned to $800, the importance of this project would be greatly diminished -- you can go out and find an $800 UMPC anywhere that does a lot more than run a browser.

It's ballooned to "no more than $300" since Arrington can't get off his thin = quality kick and went aluminum.

$800 is probably too high, but I wouldn't be surprised if this came out at $400 under pressure from his mystery funding source.

This could be a great system, as long as you can connect usb drives to it for uploading and downloading. If its cheap enough I may have to jump. Looks nice too, not clunky. Wonder how long the battery will last.
