TrickleStar's little gadget costs $34.95, but promises to help you save money in the long run. Plug a TV and Game console into it, and it will shut the toy off when the TV goes off. Since "remembering to turn it off yourself," is cheaper than $34.95, this is clearly intended for exasperated parents. [PRweb via OhGizmo!]

I suppose this might be semiuseful with a Wii, whcih already uses very, very little power even when it's turned on. WIth an Xbox 360 or a PS3 I think that the horrible wind tunnel fan noice would remind you to turn it off after just a few minutes. Also, this would itnerfere witht he 360's "stay on until you finish downloading stuff" mode.

It doesn't just turn the console off, it stops it from pulling power all day in standby mode. We actually have a power strip that does the same thing - when the TV power is turned off, it completely cuts power to our game consoles. Our Con Ed bill has been noticeably lower.

I like JeffK's power strip, but I've often wondered why the TV doesn't just have one power outlet built in.

Everyone knows the TV needs at least one device to feed it, and that device should generally be on only when the TV is. This would be a simple design addition.

Strangely, I have the reverse problem. As was mentioned early, the 360 is one loud beast, so I'm quick to turn it off. But then the TV just goes black, and I usually forget to switch it off as well, sometimes leaving it on for a day or two.

I'm not sure that this really works with modern consoles all this does is take away the standby power and require you to turn them on once you turn on the TV. Nice way to fuck up a save when someone accidentally sits on the TV remote too...

It is harmful to turn the system off mid-use because of the hard drive and disk drive. The platters on the hard drive, the game in the system, and the motors driving the hard drive or disk could get damaged or worn out if the system repeatedly had it's power cut off while running.

What is the amount of CO2 saves (remembering that most consoles, such as the PS3 and Xbox 360 already have a built in option to shut the console off if idle for a specified period of time), vs the CO2 that it costs to manufacture, ship, to drive to the store to pick one up, etc. etc...

I feel like nobody here understands what this gadget actually does. Yes, consoles can automatically power down, but they still remain in standby mode, sucking power, as long as they're plugged in. (That little red light on the front of your PS3? That's telling you that you're paying for your console to be turned off.) This basically "unplugs" the secondary device, cutting it off altogether.
