Review: Two zits with the Zeno Mini

zeno.JPGI never went through a pimply teenager phase, but over a decade later I still get the occasional zit in random places. Enter the Zeno Mini, a pocketable gadget that claims to get rid of blemishes with a 90% success rate. It has a small sensor pad at the tip that heats up to 118 degrees, and after two and a half minutes of treatment it claims to reduce pimples and eventually make them disappear. Cool concept! For $89, it's not a bad deal for people who might otherwise be inclined to pop the zit or apply super-dehydrating zit cream.

But most importantly, does it work?

The short answer: I think it does. I used the Zeno Mini on two new zits that appeared on my face a couple of weeks ago, one on my forehead and the other on my right cheek. As soon as I noticed the two grease bumps peeking out, I Zeno-ed the life out of them. The next day, instead of blossoming into big red puss-filled messes, they stayed small and, by day three, disappeared completely. Now I can't say for sure that it was the Zeno that did it because every zit is born different and lives a unique lifespan. But in early June, I had a zit under my left nostril that hurt like hell and looked really ugly. I made the mistake of popping it, and now I have a permanent red blotch on my face where it used to be. I'm pretty sure that wouldn't have happened had I had the Zeno then. So, yeah. I'm going to keep this thing in my back pocket for emergency zit zappage.

Looks like a neat product. Really only commenting because I was surprised by the last sentence. While owning one would be handy, it seems extreme to have to carry it on you. I don't think I've ever had a zit that couldn't wait until the end of the day when I get home. Then again, I often don't even notice them until I get home and my girlfriend points them out.

Is it standard practice to need emergency zit removal? Or am I the freak, never feeling these pus sacks growing on my face until I've accidentally torn them open? Some questions ache for answers.

We need a more telling test, Lisa.

I give you a week gorging on chocolate and greasy burgers, treating only the left side of your face with The Device and leaving nature to take its course on the right side.

Pictures at the end of the week and we'll have a more exciting set of results.

Lisa,
I'd advise applying some vitamin e oil to the spot under your nose to help it go away. Most drug/grocery stores sell vitamin e oil in the beauty products section, or you can just buy vitamin e liquigels in the vitamin department and poke them with a pin to get vitamin e oil. Vitamin e oil is also the main/only ingredient in a lot of 'make scars fade' treatments in the first aid section. It should really help!

Vitamin E oil? Might as well have suggested snake oil.
There is no scientific evidence that Vitamin E, when applied topically can heal anything. The (most common forms of) Vitamin E molecule is way to large to penetrate the skin in the first place.

"...In fact, Vitamin E can be irritating to the skin, and even produce allergic reactions. In one study of patients with burns, it seemed the use of Vitamin E made some scars look worse." Dr. Rachel Herschenfeld, Dermatologist - Washington Post writer.

It's usually the other ingredients in vitamin e ointments that actually do anything. Read the label, there's probably aloe in there...

Wait.... you had two zits appear on the same day, and you didn't run a controlled experiment?!? That... that was like God giving you a gift, allowing you to use the very first scientific concepts you learned about in middle school science!

It wouldn't have been a perfect experiment, of course, but waaay better than "none of my zits were any bigger the next day."

@north *shrug* I admit I haven't checked the research, but I've found vitamin e oil (I just stick a pin in liqui-caps) to be great for fading the marks of popped zits and cat scratches personally. A quick skim of a google scholar search on 'vitamin e scars' seems like you're right tho. Maybe my scar improvement was due to something else in the gel caps, or just from applying something that had a moisturizing effect.

Yeah, after reading about this in a magazine, my friend recreated this advanced technology using a metal spoon, an $8 candy thermometer he had in his kitchen, and a pot of water on the stove. He claimed it seemed to work pretty reliably AND he didn't have to spend $89.

Sadly I don't think it would work for nodular cystic acne, the kind I get. For me it's the dermatologist :(

I have had great success by changing a couple of the products I use. My acne was similar to Lisa K's - not too bad in the teenage years but continued into adulthood as a zit or three here or there. It was chronic and irritating, I almost always had at least a zit or two and felt like it really negatively affected my appearance. I finally did some trial and error and some web searching and turned up an individual's web page that I can't find any more. But he had a regimen for worse cases that I lightened up and use daily - it works great.

I wash my face in the morning with Neutrogena Extra Gentle Cleanser and moisturize after the shower with their Oil Free Moisture. If I have zits start to form, I use their On-The-Spot low-concentration benzoyl peroxide. It's only like 3% instead of the 10% concentration that most "extreem" more-is-better formulas use.

The results? Well, I haven't had a full-on zit on my face in months, and haven't had more than one in years. It works a treat, and my skin looks great. I've had a family member who hadn't seen me in 5-7 years jealously say I look younger.

I only mention the brand because it came at the end of years of trial and error. The extra gentle cleanser is a ton of work to find, only one Meijer carries it locally. Drugstore.com carries it. I highly recommend this regimen to anyone that fights light adult acne non-stop. For heavier cases, wash 2x daily and use the on-the-spot over all your problem areas after each wash. Then moisturize a few minutes later, again twice a day. It should clear up your acne in a few weeks to a couple months and should pretty much keep it away permanently.

Some cases (like Heatherb's) obviously aren't going to respond to this, but I'd say the vast majority of them will. It's like quitting smoking: it takes some willpower but once you're through it the results are great!
