Hacking the Sony Reader

An advantage Sony's Reader still has over the Amazon Kindle is that it's easy to hack. It runs Linux, has various hooks into the system for eager coders to latch onto, and will run custom applications directly from SD card.

The new models, out later this month, are finally Mac-compatible by default, too -- a feature that currently has to be added with third party software.

Among the basic Reader hacks are font changes, reassigning buttons and installing Sudoku. Reghardware has a how-to guide.

Kindle runs Linux, but the userspace stuff is mostly Java iirc. There are kindle hacks out there to tweak screensaver, fonts, and etc., FYI.

...and that it's not limited to a single country.

I had the Sony ereader 505 and I liked it for what it had to offer but I still like my kindle. I don't need to add all these crazy features to it. I'm fine with it just allowing me to read books. I convert the files and read them on my kindle. But I still like Sony's new offering just because the prices are much more competitive and might be able to take on the Amazon Kindle.

@ziggytek "Allowing" is an apt word choice.

Since when was third-party software required for Mac support? Just use a USB cable and drag your documents to it. The only thing you lose is the precalculated page numbering when you resize the text.

I also know a bit of hacking but Im not doing it to destroy something. Just a bit of knowledge bout it. For you people that need the hottest, newest gear – and for no empirical, logical, intelligent, or rational reason at all! – keep an eye out for the PS3 Slim. The PS3 Slim is a smaller, but equally
powerful, version of the wildly popular Sony Playstation 3, except it's 1/3 the size, and uses over 1/3 less power. It comes with a 120 GB hard drive, and is fully compatible with Blu-Ray and HD DVDs. Many will get installment loans for it. The good news is that when it debuts this holiday season, it's only going to retail for $299. The PS3 Slim for less than most short term loans – sounds like a good deal.
