Sony delays big-screen OLED TV

sony-drive-xel-1_001.jpgSony's delayed the release of larger OLED television sets, previously expected later this year. It's no surprise: Sony isn't in a mood to lose money on reputation-building flagship products. Perhaps it also wants to send a message to its engineers, accustomed to making high-tech toys rather than usable and effective products.

Its XEL-1 is a marvel, the only OLED TV on the market. But it remains $2,000 despite being a tiny 11 inches across. Until you see it in person, you just don't get it (and even when you do, you think, "I'll be all over that...when it's cheaper!")

I've seen it... and what can I say? Meh. That's about it.

But I'm not really into this cult of screen - big HD makes high quality footage look like DV. Good DV, but...DV.

Small OLED even more so. Too crisp. The colours are great though, which is a start - I still can't get decent colour repro on mid-cost LCDs.

My problem with the XEL-1 is the base; why bother making such a tiny thin TV when it needs that huge thing under it?
