My wife and I recently visited the Galileo exhibit at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia PA.
The workmanship and apparent precision in THOSE instruments is astounding, but to think that a device of this type and complexity was possible at that time?
That's really interesting! I wonder what the motive power was - turning a knob wouldn't be very practical when you want to discover the positions of the slower-turning planets.
