While I’d agree there’s a need for an option to set the zoom permanently (maybe), there were so many times as a user-side IT tech that I’d get people that would be doing something with CTRL and accidentally bump the scroll wheel on the mouse. This has the same effect as CTRL+ and CTRL-. If the zoom wasn’t persistent, they just could open a new browser window and it’d fix itself, which is the natural troglodyte reaction of “Restart ‘er and she’ll werk”. But since IE6′s is persistent, they’d have to put in a trouble ticket.

I think this is just a case of the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. Too many people would screw up their browser windows with no IT person on hand to explain what went wrong vs. a lot fewer people that need persistent zoom.
